The Beauty and Charm of East County’s Local Winegrowers
The small towns of Brentwood, Knightsen and Byron have long been touted as tiny farming communities saturated in history, yet overflowing with great schools, reasonable cost of living and people that are dedicated to their community, family and future. Long term residents remember the days of nearly empty roads, miles of orchards and fields of corn, alfalfa and strawberries. Today, the views have changed…more homes and crowded streets and many of the fields once filled with orchards have transitioned to vineyards. Although people don’t love the traffic, the majestic Mt. Diablo highlights the beauty of the vineyards. At Campos Family Vineyards, we are proud to carry on the agricultural traditions of the far East Contra Costa community with our open fields, bountiful vineyards and event center that brings business, families and communities together.
Although the footprint of the wines grown in East Contra Costa County is much smaller than larger, more recognized growing regions in California, such as Napa Valley or Sonoma, Campos Family Vineyards is making an exciting name for ourselves. With more than a million residents in Contra Costa County, the value of local vineyards and event centers are important to the preservation of the historical roots of the community and providing the hundreds of thousands of residents a family-friendly venue for entertainment and education.
Contra Costa County is home to California’s premiere old vine Zinfandel vineyards and slowly is becoming more recognized for Rhone varietals. The unique Contra Costa region is ideal for vineyards due to the deep sandy soils and the temperature fluctuations created by the cool coastal winds that sweep through the county from West to the eastern Central Valley. The soils and the growing environment are unique because most county wines are not designated by territorial qualities…yet, the vines stemming from our beautiful lands carry the characteristics of the history and the people, giving the wines earthy, dusty and leathery overtones – a definitive Contra Costa styles reflective of the old Western, roots of the community.
Campos Family Vineyards is a destination center for local events, including concerts, corporate events and personal celebrations and weddings. The stunning property sits on a 44-acre parcel in Byron, California – but makes you feel as if you have arrived to a peaceful haven, far from the stresses and responsibilities of day-to-day life. The vineyard itself is a stunning 37 acres planted with five varietals including Cabernet, Franc, Mouvedre, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. The tasting room is open Fridays 1pm to 5pm, Saturdays 12pm-5pm and Sundays 1pm-5pm. We welcome families with young children and have beautiful open grass for playing and a play structure for the older children. We invite you to lose yourself in the beauty and history of Campos Family vineyards and explore the grounds, tasting room and the spectacular award winning estate wines.
